- Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation.
- Because of similarity to LH it is used in ART's to induce ovulation when mature follicles are found.
- HCG interacts with the LHCG receptors and promotes the maintenance of corpus luteum during the beginning of pregnancy, causing it to secrete progesterone.
- It also acts on the hypothalamus thereby regulating the food intake, caloric intake and cravings.
- Due to its highly negative charge, hCG may repel the immune cells of the mother, protecting the fetus during the first trimester. It has also been hypothesized that hCG may be a placental link for the development of local maternal immunotolerance.
