- Mifepristone is a progesterone antagonist
- Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone needed to maintain the pregnancy. Because this hormone is blocked, the uterine lining begins to shed, the cervix begins to soften and bleeding may occur.
- Misoprostol belongs to prostaglandin which causes uterine contractions
- Misoprostol causes the softening and expansion of the cervical opening, and amplified uterine sensitivity to prostaglandins causing contractions in the womb in order to expel out the contents of womb.
Indication
- Medical termination of pregnancy (49 days or less duration)
- Postcoital contraception endometriosis
- Intra-uterine foetal death
- Induction of menses
- Cervical ripening
